Translating is writing
I began my career as a self-taught translator, specializing in graphic novels and academic writing in the humanities and social sciences. Very rapidly, I came to understand that I derived the most satisfaction from projects that demanded very close reading, focused research, and creativity in order to find a way to render the nuances of an author’s French writing into English. In other words, I enjoy translating difficult, well-written texts. Later on, this is what led me to obtain a Masters degree in literary translation: the challenges and rewards of translating literary fiction and nonfiction are close to those of translating eloquent academic prose. My training gave me deeper access to elements of literary criticism and translation theory that strengthen my practice of careful reading and pointed research and, when necessary, thoughtful dialogue with authors, editors, and project managers.
Traduire, c’est écrire
J’ai commencé ma carrière en tant que traductrice autodidacte, spécialisée en bande dessinée et en articles universitaires en sciences humaines et sociales. Très rapidement, j’ai compris que les projets qui me procuraient le plus de satisfaction étaient ceux qui exigeaient une lecture minutieuse, de la recherche pointue et de la créativité pour trouver une manière de rendre les nuances du texte d’un auteur francophone en anglais. Autrement dit, j’aime traduire des textes difficiles mais bien écrits. Plus tard, cette disposition m’a menée à obtenir un Master en traduction littéraire : les défis et les bonheurs de la traduction littéraire sont semblables à ceux de la traduction d’un éloquent travail de recherche. Cette formation m’a fourni un accès approfondi à des éléments de la critique littéraire et de la traductologie qui viennent à l’appui de ma pratique professionnelle de lecture attentionnée et de recherche ciblée, accompagnées, si besoin, de dialogue réfléchi auprès des auteurs, des éditeurs ou des gestionnaires de projet.
Oral language made visible: graphic novel translation
My career as a translator grew out of my enthusiasm for comics and graphic novels. My first published project was a piece of graphic fiction for Words Without Borders, followed soon thereafter by numerous projects for Europe Comics, Humanoids Inc., Fantagraphics, and other publishers. Translating graphic novels demands close attention to varieties of oral language, and sensitivity to the interplay of word and image.
Rendre la langue orale visible : la traduction des bandes dessinées
Ma carrière de traductrice est née grâce à mon enthousiasme pour la bande dessinée. Ma première publication a été une traduction de BD paru dans Words Without Borders, suivie rapidement de nombreux projets pour Europe Comics, Humanoids Inc. et Fantagraphics, entre autres maisons d’édition. Traduire la BD exige une attention profonde aux variétés de langue orale, ainsi qu’une sensibilité à l’interaction entre la langue et l’image.
